Greg's Favorite Knots

Fisherman's Knot

Connects two ends of rope or cord together. Can be used to make a small circle of rope, which is very usefull to make a prusik cord loop (the next entry below) or a sling for all types of improvised climbing uses.

Prusiks/Hitches/Autobloc

A prusik knot requires a small loop of cord that is tied around a top rope. When there's no load (weight pulling) on the prusik it can be moved up and down on the top rope. When the know is under load (e.g. you are hanging from it) the friction increases and it's able to support your weight. Essentially this provides climbers with movable handholds allowing us to ascend or descend a rope, at least safely, even if it may not be with ease or grace...

Don't own a fancy Prusik loop? No Problem! Take a short length of cord and use the Double Fisherman's knot above to tie each end together to make a prusik loop.

I was taught a variation that loops the carabiner through both outer loops rather than just one (as opposed to the standard Prusik below). I can't seem to find it online though.

Coiling Rope:

Super important so your rope does not end up in knots that are NOT of your making!

Bowline Knot

Truckers Hitch

My favorite knot! And is a piece of cake after you learn the bowline!
